鈦Why a metal chasen — titanium vs bamboo
Five hundred years of bamboo. The chasen — 茶筅 — has whisked every bowl of matcha worth remembering. Bamboo also splits. It molds. It wears down to a stub. A bamboo chasen is a beautiful, fragile thing: whisk daily and one lasts months — tines snap, the base darkens, and if you don't dry it perfectly, it molds. Every tea lover knows the smell of a chasen left damp overnight.
Titanium doesn't play those games. It doesn't rust. It doesn't hold yesterday's matcha in its pores. Its tines don't snap under a whisking hand. Same W-motion your wrist already knows — in a metal built to outlast the hand that holds it.
So this metal chasen isn't about replacing bamboo out of disrespect. It's a bamboo chasen alternative for the daily bowl — the tradition, and the instrument, passed on in a form your grandchildren could whisk with.

The whisk
What is a titanium chasen?
A chasen (茶筅) is the traditional whisk for preparing matcha. A titanium chasen is the same tool with its fine tines made from titanium instead of bamboo — a metal chasen built for the same W-motion, designed to be unbreakable and hygienic. Ours is in development, with a titanium tine head and a swappable handle as the v1 design.
Titanium vs bamboo chasen — what's the difference?
Same shape, same whisking motion, different lifespan. A bamboo chasen is light and traditional, but its tines snap over time and it can mold if stored damp. Titanium doesn't rust, doesn't hold odors in its pores, and its tines don't snap — a bamboo chasen replacement for daily drinkers who are tired of buying a new whisk every few months.
How long does a bamboo chasen last?
With daily whisking, typically a few months before the tines start breaking and the base darkens — and faster if it isn't dried perfectly, since a damp chasen can mold. That short lifespan is exactly the problem the titanium chasen is designed to solve.
How much will the titanium chasen cost — and when can I buy one?
The target is $99 on Kickstarter, if this survey says go. It's still in development and there's no payment today; join the waitlist above and you'll hear first if and when it launches.
What makes this chasen special?
Three things. First, the tines: fine titanium tines in true chasen form — around a hundred of them, shaped for the same W-motion — not a coil frother or a kitchen whisk borrowing the name. Metal, but still a chasen. Second, the handle swaps: one head, handles you can change, and the head detaches for washing. Third, it's built to be bought once and handed down — pass on the tradition, and the instrument — instead of replaced every few months the way bamboo is.
Beyond matcha
Can I use a titanium chasen for anything besides matcha?
Yes — a fine-tined whisk is a general powder tool. We're designing it for dissolving miso into soup, whisking hojicha, cocoa and golden-milk powders, and bringing small dressings together. Titanium is non-reactive, so it won't pick up or pass on flavors, and it rinses completely clean — no matcha ghost in tomorrow's miso soup.
Is a titanium chasen a good fit for cafés and tea classes?
That's one of the uses we're designing it for. A café whisking hundreds of bowls a day burns through bamboo chasen as consumables, and beginners in a tea class are hard on tines. Titanium tines don't snap. Care is split by material: the detachable metal head is dishwasher-safe and sanitizable, while the walnut handle is hand-wash and hand-care only. The swappable-handle design makes that easy — detach the head for the dishwasher and keep the wooden handle out. No replacement cycle, and no damp-whisk mold risk between classes. If you run a café or teach matcha, join the waitlist and tell us in the survey's last box — trade use is exactly what we want to hear about.
Safety & care
Will a titanium chasen scratch my bowl?
On glazed ceramic or stoneware, the risk is low — and ceramic is what we recommend for daily use. The tines are fine round wire with inward-curled, polished tips — no raw cut ends — and they flex, so whisking pressure stays light. Compare it to a metal spoon in a ceramic mug; titanium is also softer than the stainless-steel whisks people already use in glass and ceramic every day. Glass is softer than metal, so long-term daily whisking in glass may leave faint micro-marks — another reason ceramic is the daily driver. The most common scratch culprit isn't the whisk at all: it's grit trapped under it, so give the bowl a quick rinse first. And the production finish includes electropolished tine tips — because a whisk made to be passed on shouldn't mark the bowl it's used in.
Can you put a chasen in the dishwasher?
A bamboo chasen, no — every maker's care guide says the same: dishwasher heat and detergent warp, splinter and break the tines, so bamboo is warm-water rinse only, forever. The titanium chasen is designed to split the difference. Care is split by material: the detachable metal head is dishwasher-safe and sanitizable, while the walnut handle is hand-wash and hand-care only. Detach the head, run it through the dishwasher, keep the wood out — that's the whole routine.
